E-Cigs: Fast Track to Traditional Smoking for Youth

Teens who vape — or use e-cigarettes — are more likely to smoke regular cigarettes later on, according to a recently concluded long-term study. The findings add strength to existing research showing that the use of e-cigarettes by young people often leads to smoking traditional, combustible cigarettes.

“E-cigarettes are currently the most popular nicotine- or tobacco-related product among youth, with an estimated 3 million teens vaping, according to lead author Krysten W. Bold, PhD, of the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine…

“The rising frequency of recent e-cigarette use among youth over time is concerning, especially in light of evidence that e-cigarette use is a significant risk factor for future conventional cigarette use,” the authors wrote. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, was published in the journal Pediatrics.”
